MusicMakers
is more than just a music education company...it is a philosophy.
We believe
that:
- music education
should be taught by qualified professionals in a manner which
is challenging but motivating, educational yet fun.
- music lessons
should prepare the student for a lifetime of enjoying music--far
beyond their years as a student.
- in order
for music lessons to work, there must be mutual respect between
student and teacher.
- music education
is integral for human development, and should be an essential
part of every person's total education.
- music is
not just another activity, but should be enjoyed by the family
as a whole, not just the person taking lessons.
- music is an integral tool for self-expression, social interaction and building culture.
- music study helps create a cultural identity, which is becoming more and more necessary in our global times.
- music study builds character, strength, discipline and discerning tasks.

MusicMakers is the only music school that offers sequential-based programs
for all age groups. This means that you can start your music education with
us as a baby, and continue "graduating" on to the next sequential program
throughout adulthood, even into the professional level. The many benefits
of this approach include becoming completely comfortable in your learning
environment, and being able to stay under that tutelage as your needs and
goals change. You can build relationships here at MusicMakers, and we think
of you as our extended family. That makes all the difference in the world
to your learning success!
A typical sequence could be:
Start with: Mini-MusicMakers ages birth-3
Go on to: Mini-MusicMakers special class for 4 and 5 year olds
Choose: Sound Beginnings Keyboard and/or Violin Ventures (both for 4-7 year old beginners)
Then: Move on to private instruction at the 30 minute or 45 minute level
Supplementing with: Performing Arts Camps, Rhythm Rousers, Children's Voice
Class, Master Singers
As an accomplished teen or adult moving up to: 45 minute-90 minute lessons
in your instrument.
Along your journey, there are also several other supplemental programs you
can choose to take such as the Do a Duet and Try a Trio programs for
ensemble experience; private theory, composition, conducting lessons;
Alexander Technique to ensure your health and stamina as a musician;
audition preparation classes; Visiting Artists series so you can learn from
more pros; and field trips to various musical events and destinations.
You should also know that all of our programs are extremely well thought out
and carried out, and we have a devoted office staff to take care of your
needs. We enjoy catering to families, and trying to make your lesson times
convenient for you. We continually evaluate our teachers and our students,
and pride ourselves on our ability to create the best music education
programs in the state.

Originally
an idea of MusicMakers' director/owner, Paula Penna, MusicMakers started as a dream. After earning Master's and Bachelor's degrees in music education, she taught privately and in public schools, and administered teacher-training and outreach programs at the great university conservatory, Manhattan School of Music. Penna sought the opportunity to create her vision of a community music school which would be free to create interesting new approaches to teaching music.
Knowing the scarcity of time in a two-income household,
she decided to start MusicMakers Lessons At Home with the special
service of bringing the educator to the home of the student, working
around the students' schedules.
Since 1997, MusicMakers Lessons At Home grew from a few teachers
and students to over a dozen teachers and over 100 students! MusicMakers Lessons at Home then added recitals, masterclasses, and other interactive and performing
opportunities to the MusicMakers semesters.
In May, 2000
the MusicMakers had grown so much that the school expanded into their own learning and recital
space...the MusicMakers Academy. Located at 485 Hartford Road, Manchester, CT the first MusicMakers Academy space
was made up of over 1500 square feet of studio, classroom, and performance
space. The Academy then added an office manager to the administration staff to help run the organization's day to day operations.
The expansion
also included a big move: MusicMakers became MusicMakers, LLC, which
is the umbrella company for both the MusicMakers Lessons At
Home program and the MusicMakers Academy.
In January, 2008, the Academy moved into a larger space, a beautiful old Victorian home at 517 Hartford Road. With our new 3000sf space, we are now able to offer more classes,
workshops, and special performances. Our classes
include programs in applied music, academic music, music for families,
and music wellness.
