  F A Q s

We are constantly working to improve our services, and we keep your comments and questions in mind.

Below is a sampling of our most popular questions.

Q What instruments do you teach?

A As of January 1, 2003, we now teach private lessons on instruments from all of the instrument families. They include: Voice, Piano, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Violin, Cello, Trumpet, Saxophone, Flute and Clarinet. Classes are offered in voice, piano, violin, percussion and guitar.

Q Where do you travel to?

A We currently have traveling teachers available in Glastonbury, Manchester, South Windsor, West Hartford, Avon, and Farmington. Please contact us for your particular area.

Q How do you charge? What are your rates?

A We have different pricing schedules, according to the length of your lesson, when your start (beginning or during a semester), and how many in your family are taking lessons. We have 3 semesters (Fall, Spring, and Summer) that would apply to the billing periods.

Q Why should I hire MusicMakers rather than find my own teacher to travel to my home, for a cheaper fee?

A 1. Music teachers in your home, like a child care provider, maid, etc., are considered to be "Household Employees". You may not be aware of the tax laws, immigration laws, etc., involved in hiring a Household Employee. By hiring MusicMakers, you actually save money, time and headaches by avoiding the paperwork, fees and accounting to keep your teacher (and yourself) within the law.

2. MusicMakers only hires teachers with the highest credentials, who are pre-screened, well-educated and well-trained. We know music education, what works and what doesn't. We are the expert working for you.

Q What age does my child have to be to begin private lessons?

A This depends mostly on the instrument, and also on your child's development. However, studies on the brain have indicated that it is best to begin musical studies during preschool years, as a person's aptitude for musical learning levels off at nine years old. Here is a general list of ages for each instrument:
Piano:
Age 4 and older
Violin:
Age 4 and older
Guitar:
5 years old
Flute:
8 years old
Voice*:
Girls: 13
Boys: 14
* Voice lessons should only be taken by children who are at least one year past the onset of puberty, due to the fragile nature of the vocal cords. Whereas it is better for most instrument learning that the child start young, with voice this is not the case. Children younger than these ages who are very interested in singing may take a combined lesson of piano/voice for 45 minutes (30 minutes piano, 15 minutes voice) with the permission of the teacher.

Q Do you offer any family discounts?

A Yes, we do. We offer a 5% discount to families who take 90 or more minutes of private lessons per week (one student at 90 min, two students at 45 min, three students at 30 min, etc.). Any student currently enrolled for private lessons also gets an automatic discount of 10% off any Academy group class, as well. And, we offer a sibling discount of 20% off when siblings are signing up for the same group class at the academy.

Q I have had a difficult time finding a good teacher who is willing to come to my home. Yet, you have over ten teachers on your faculty. Who are these teachers and why are they willing to travel?

A It truly IS a daunting task to find a travelling music teacher these days. Many established teachers are just not willing to travel. One might be tempted to think that the only "travelers" are the ones who don't have a choice. Not true!

Since MusicMakers, LLC is a company, we are able to offer our teachers many more amenities than the average family could. For instance, by becoming a part of MusicMakers, our teachers enjoy the benefit of being around a prestigious group of like-minded individuals with whom they can consult. Secondly, our administrative staff takes on all of the administrative burdens that most music teachers dislike: billing, accounting, setting up schedules, planning events, maintaining instruments, providing special events, and advertising. This leaves the teacher free to do what they enjoy the most....Teach! Thirdly, the teachers can count on a regular paycheck. All of this amounts to this bottom line: Our students get the best teachers in the area in the convenience of their own home! For more information on our faculty's credentials, please click here.
