Home-Based Business Moves to Commercial Space

MusicMakers, LLC a former home-based music instruction company expands it’s services by opening the new MusicMakers Academy

MANCHESTER, Connecticut -- May 1, 2000 -- MusicMakers, LLC is excited to announce the Grand Opening of The MusicMakers Academy at 485 Hartford Road in Manchester, CT. The Academy is unique in that it will service the total musician--mind, body, and spirit! Owned and managed by Paula Penna, MMed, BMus. the Academy is dedicated to the highest level of music instruction at affordable prices.

MusicMakers started out as MusicMakers Lessons At Home, the ONLY company in Connecticut to offer professional music lessons in the students’ homes. It has operated as a home-based business for four years, run soley by Paula Penna. MusicMakers has a faculty of 12 music teachers offering lessons on piano, keyboard, voice, violin, flute, guitar, and bass guitar. The program runs much like any other music school, using a trimester schedule which includes private instruction, master classes, and recitals, except that the primary work is done in the students’s homes instead of in a formal studio.

Much of the appeal of the fast-growing company (it’s student roster grew by 400% year 2-3 and another 400% by year 4) has been it’s appeal to today’s working families, and those families with more than two children.

The new MusicMakers Academy stays true to it’s dedication to modern families: the 1600 square foot facility is family-friendly and includes a comfortable waiting area with leather couches, cushions, and family-oriented reading materials; a child’s play space equipped with a slide, a tent, toys, books, and dolls; and an infant changing table in the private, newly decorated bathroom. The classroom space has a “homework nook” for siblings who are waiting, a lending library, and a computer center will soon be set up for use.

MusicMakers, LLC has moved it’s central office out of the house and into the 485 Hartford Road location, as well. Over the past four years, the office had been located in Penna’s dining room, followed by the extra bedroom, and finally to a renovated third floor when she needed more room to grow. Like many home-based business, the time finally came to move into a more professional space which is also more accessible to clients.

The Academy’s five-year plan includes continuing the Lessons Institute, which will include private and semi-private music lessons and ensemble classes; the development of a Wellness Program for the total musician--mind, body, and spirit; Arts Advocacy services; a Community Service Center to include events such as Christmas Caroling and performances at local medical facilities and businesses; and a Family Music Center which will include unique programs such as “M.O.M”--Music for Mothers, vocalists’ breath support for birthing, Storytelling for Parents and Parents-To-Be, and Wedding Music Consultation.

This Summer MusicMakers is offering the following services:

  1. Private lessons in piano, keyboard, guitar, violin, flute, and voice both in the students’ homes and in the Academy.
  2. The Music Class: a music and movement class for preschoolers and their caregivers
  3. The Alexander Technique--a well-known method of eliminating mental and physical stress and learning to prevent injury.
  4. Piano Camps--week-long classes for beginners through late beginner levels.
